The Trade Down

I’m sure I’ll be crushed by some, as I have on another blog run by a less fair and patient bastion of bloggers, but I’m looking at this anyway.

Many of us have commented that we’d be interested in a trade down, or at least looking at the option. What we lack is a real sense of what it could give us to have 4 extra picks in the next two drafts for the number one overall this year. I’ve compiled a list of possible prospects for each pick. Keep in mind, these draft positions are not set in stone just yet and these are only prospects taken from a few mock drafts that have placed players in the range of these draft positions. Next year’s positions are, of course, very fluid and could change drastically.

So, without dragging on:

2012 Draft—

#4 (from C):

Robert Griffin, QB, Baylor

Justin Blackmon, WR, Ok. St.

Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford

#26 (from C):

Chase Minniefield, CB, Virginia

Quinton Coples, DE, UNC

Mark Barron, SS, Alabama

Cordy Glenn, OT/G, Georgia

Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska

Dwight Jones, WR, UNC

Zach Brown, LB, UNC

Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

#36 (from C):

Jerel Worthy, DT, MSU

Antonio Allen, S, S. Carolina

Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson

Kevin Zeitler, G, Wisconsin

Johnathan Banks, CB, Mississippi St.

Shaun Prater, CB, Iowa

Markelle Martin, S, Ok. St.

Tony Dye, SS, UCLA

Senio Kelemete, G, Washington

Marvin McNutt, WR, Iowa

Brandon Wheedon, QB, Ok. St.

2013 Draft—

#5-10(from C):

Robert Woods, WR, USC

Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M

David Amerson, CB, NC State

Marcus Lattimore, RB, S. Carolina

Michael Dyer, RB, Auburn

DeMarcus Milliner, CB, Alabama

Tyler Eifert, TE, ND

Xavier Rhodes, CB, Florida State

Seantrel Henderson, OT, Miami

I realize this will be debate on fit and scheme versus overall position and value, BPA versus scheme, etc. I expect this and would welcome other suggestions to the fold. However, for me, I’d love to see the following picks made if we traded out of #1:

#4: Blackmon, WR, Ok. St.

#26: Mark Barron, SS, Alabama

#33: Alfonzo Dennard, CB, Nebraska

#36: Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson or Zeitler, G, Wisconsin

#65: Shaun Prater, CB, Iowa

#96: Brandon Wheedon, QB, Ok. St. or Tony Dye, SS, UCLA

These are my choices for the first four rounds this year, although my mind could be changed. I feel like it addresses certain needs if we do things like let Dallas Clark and Wayne go, etc.

I’d love to hear what other people think, who they have on their radar and maybe discuss if they think this route is worth looking at in trade for the number one.
