Super Bowl losers curse

Mike Lopresti writes at USA Today that the Colts are perhaps the latest in a long line of Super Bowl losers to face tough times:

My theory is it all began with the 1990-93 Buffalo Bills. Getting to four consecutive Super Bowls was remarkable, but losing all four turned them into a punch line.

Apparently, the football gods didn’t like the jokes, so they decided it would henceforth be impossible for Super Bowl losers to quickly return. Fate would be as foul as needed.

Maybe you’re skeptical. Fine. But consider the 17 Super Bowl losers since the Bills.

Eight of the 17 didn’t make the postseason the next season.

Of the nine who did, only four won a playoff game. And none won two.

Todd Smith is a part-time sportswriter who spends too much time arguing on Twitter. What he really loves is eating poorly and watching football. He got his first Colts t-shirt in 1984 shortly after the Mayflower trucks arrived and has never given up on his hometown team. He also still holds to the belief that Kordell Stewart stepped out of the end zone and thus cheated the Colts.
