Ahmad Bradshaw's recent press-release jargon, or whatever you want to call it, was meant to reassure fans, because there's nothing quite like grabbing a high-level star just to see PUP beside his name to open training camp. Still, by saying that he doesn't really need preseason reps – because who does, on a new team? – Bradshaw sounds like he already has the job locked in.
The Colts play the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 11 and Bradshaw's former team, the New York Giants, on Aug. 18. Big Blue would make for a tantalizing return date, but we don't anticipate that. Asked if he needed to play in a preseason game at all, Bradshaw told Mike Chappell of The Indianapolis Star: "Not really."
Hence, more running experience for second-year man Vick Ballard, who is quietly not implying that he's already at a start-able level. I mean, I can't say for sure what Pep Hamilton's thinking, but when a runningback you just picked up decides "New team? Same old", it might be enough to prompt a change in opinion. Will Bradshaw start in his return? Sure. Will everyone else be as comfortable with him, as with Ballard?
… "Not really."
