Rumor: TJ Houshmandzadeh in Downtown Indianapolis

I know. I know. After all of the Randy Moss rumors spreading around Twitter during the early stages of training camp, even mentioning a veteran wide receiver in town is almost painful. The difference between the Moss rumors and this one is that Will Carroll is the source for the rumor.

If you do not already know, Carroll is a sports writer who focuses on injuries for Sports Illustrated and happens to live in Indianapolis. It seems unlikely that Carroll would project a rumor like that for a joke — although Coltzilla will keep an eye on his tweets to see if he retracts the rumor at a later time.

The other things about this rumor is that Houshmandzadeh meeting with the Colts seems like a much more plausible situation. While Moss may be willing to return to the NFL for the right situation, and probably the right money, Houshmandzadeh is a player who may be willing to take considerably less than what he could make if he waits for cuts to get onto a roster with a player like Peyton Manning and with a franchise like the Colts who have a legitimate shot to make a run at a championship.

Do the Colts need another wide receiver? I really don’t think they do. I think the receiving weapons on the team currently are arguably the most dangerous in the NFL. Of course, that is an easy statement while the team is fully healthy (knock on wood).

Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, Austin Collie, Anthony Gonzalez, Dallas Clark, Jacob Tamme, and Joseph Addai are all proven receiving weapons who have all built a rapport with Peyton Manning. Even former undrafted free agent Blair White is the kind of player that is easy to root for and who, frankly, I feel has a very bright future if he continues to develop.

Still, is Houshmandzadeh is in town, and if he is meeting with the Colts, the likelihood that he could end up on the roster is much higher than Moss would. Coltzilla will continue to provide updates on the “story” when they become available.
