If you follow me on Twitter (if not, do, please), you’re probably sick of hearing about the Annual (if you thought it was good last year, just wait). Well, take that Pepto cause here comes some more.
I floated the idea on Twitter of doing a “Best Photo of 2013” contest to fill a spread in the Annual, and well, let’s just say there was a runaway winner before the horses even got to the gate (there’s a gate in horse racing right?). “The Dive,” as it’s being called (by me), was easily the most recommended photo for the piece. It’s a cool photo and an iconic Colts moment, so the love is understandable.
That being the case, much like a best NBA player conversation, we’ve decided to do a “best of the rest” instead. I’m making this a top 4 to keep it concise but there were definitely plenty of awesome choices from the past year of Colts football. You can vote here on the site or hit me up on Twitter and I will compile those votes as well (hell, you could even vote multiple times and I wouldn’t know, but let’s be honest, ain’t nobody got time for that).
“Passing the Torch”
We all know the story, Manning back to Indy, people wearing split Colts-Broncos jerseys (I’ve come to terms with it), and of course a fantastic game the Colts won in dramatic fashion in primetime. The photo of Manning and Luck shaking hands surrounded by a gaggle of photographers jostling like so many chickens at feeding time, became an instant classic in the annals of NFL photographs and perfectly epitomized a night of catharsis for Colts fans struggling to let go of the Peyton Manning era (you there yet?).

It’s no surprise that one of the all-time greatest playoff games also produced some of last year’s best photographs. The emotional high of the second half of Colts-Chiefs last year was perhaps best typified by this beautiful shot of the diminutive T.Y. Hilton (who dominated that game like few ever have) being hoisted up, mid TD celebration, by the mountain that is Colts RT Gosder Cherilus. What a game, what a photo.

Hilton’s game winning, 64 yard TD against Kansas City produced multiple awesome photos (see above), but this was easily one of the best. Taken by our own Indy Star wine critic/visual journalist extraordinaire (yeah, it’s weird, I don’t know), Robert Scheere, this photo of T.Y. mid-prance (yes, he pranced, sources say he learned from the best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDzRIg6cV3g) is a great reminder that even world class athletes do weird things with their bodies when they’re excited.

While the photo is undeniably cool, I’m including it for one reason only, certifiable proof that Trent Richardson had at least one legitimate running lane last year (he did gain 12 yards on this run, so you know, hope?).
This is apropos of nothing but just look how weird Andrew Luck’s forearm looks in this photo. He’s either a champion, uhm… self-manipulator (maybe he just does a lot of forearm curls, yeah, that’s it), or a direct descendant of Popeye. Also, that beard/ridiculous grin.
