The Colts made another roster move earlier today, signing linebacker Robert Ruggiero. To make room, they waived-injured former Arena League linebacker Shawn Loiseau, who will go to the IR assuming he clears waivers.
More on both players from the Colts press release:
Ruggiero, 6-2, 245 pounds, was a tryout player during the Colts rookie mini-camp this past May. As a senior at Bridgewater State University last year, he was named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year after totaling 44 tackles and 23.0 tackles for loss. Ruggiero also participated in the 2013 All American Bowl and earned the Jim Marshall Award as the top defensive lineman. He transferred to BSU following three seasons at Springfield College and in four collegiate seasons, compiled career totals of 47.5 tackles for loss and 22.0 sacks.
Loiseau was last signed by the Colts as a free agent on August 4. He came to the team from the LA Kiss of the Arena Football League, where he totaled 23 tackles (16 solo), four tackles for loss, 1.0 sack and two passes defensed in five games played.
Ruggiero ran a 4.66 second 40-yard dash at his pro day with a 7.20-second 3-cone drill and 25 bench reps. He played as what appeared to line up as a 4-3 DE at Bridgewater State, but he is listed as an ILB on NFL Draft Scout. Discrepancies aside, expect the rookie to compete for a spot as a pass rushing OLB.
The Colts want some depth in the pass rushing department, though it’s tough to say what to expect from a guy signed halfway through the preseason. Nevertheless, Ruggiero tore Division III last year. Here are some highlights:
