Colts Activate WR LaVon Brazill, Waive Defensive End Lawrence Guy

According to Mike Chappell of the Indianapolis Star, the Colts waived DE Lawrence Guy today so they could activate WR LaVon Brazill to the active roster.

Brazill had been serving a suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.  Many believe the speedy young receiver has some potential despite playing a very small role in the offense his rookie year (11 catches, 186 yards, TD, but an impressive 16.9 ypc).

Guy, on the other hand, spent most of 2012 with the team before being cut in the preseason this year.  He re-signed on September 24th, played as a backup for a couple games, and most notably blocked a Seahawks field goal yesterday leading to Delano Howell’s touchdown that helped turn the tide in the Colts’ 34-28 win.

Guy played 46 of 127 defensive snaps over the past two games – not bad for a rotational player – and had 3 QB hurries, 3 QB hits, and two stops, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF gave Guy positive grades of 2.4 and 2.6 on defense in his two games).

Such is life in the NFL.  One day you’re blocking a field goal, and the next, you’re hitting the waiver wire.  Many fans have wondered if someone else could have been let go, but the Colts originally signed Guy because starter Ricky Jean Francois was going to miss some playing time with a groin injury.  While this is sad news for Guy, it may be a good sign for Jean Francois’s health and availability.  We’ll have to wait and see.
