The Colts reduced their roster to 53 players today, cutting 19 players. They waive-injured three others who will revert to the IR list if they clear waivers.
Some of the notable cuts were OLB and former rugby player Daniel Adongo, T Ben Ijalana, QB Chandler Harnish, LB Josh McNary, and DT Drake Nevis. Here is the full list from the Colts’ press announcement:
The Indianapolis Colts today waived the following players: OLB-Daniel Adongo, S-Larry Asante, C-Thomas Austin, CB-Marshay Green, DE-Lawrence Guy, QB-Chandler Harnish, FB-Robert Hughes, T-Ben Ijalana, TE-Dominique Jones, WR-Jeremy Kelley, LB-Josh McNary, DT-Drake Nevis, CB-Sheldon Price, WR-Jabin Sambrano, WR-Lanear Sampson, LB-Monte Simmons, T-Bradley Sowell, NT-Martin Tevaseu and T-Lee Ziemba.
The team also waived-injured T-Emmett Cleary, LB-Shawn Loiseau and CB-Daxton Swanson., If Cleary, Loiseau and Swanson clear waivers, they will revert to the Colts Injured Reserve list.
Some of the above players, such as S Larry Asante, Jones, and Guy, had impressive moments during the preseason.
Several fans were wondering who would stay along the defensive line, where there were more promising young players than roster spots. At defensive tackle, (that’s the right defensive end in Pagano’s scheme); there was a three-way battle to back up Ricky Jean Francois. Indianapolis chose to retain Ricardo Matthews and rookie Montori Hughes over the talented but oft-injured Drake Nevis.
At left defensive end, veteran and former second round draft pick Fili Moala edged out Lawrence Guy to be the backup to Cory Redding, while Josh Chapman and Aubrayo Franklin will man the nose tackle position.
At wide receiver, the team is down to five, with Griff Whalen (no surprise) and kick returner David Reed making the roster, but given the front office’s recent moves at the position, that may be another where they aren’t yet finished.
As other players clear waivers, the Colts may not be done tweaking the bottom of their roster. We’ll keep you informed as the roster continues to take shape.
