Injury Update: Whalen in Boot, Edds Injures Knee

We reported last week at that rookies Josh Chapman, Tim Fugger, and Justin Anderson would be starting out training camp on the non-football injury list (Chapman) and the physically unable to perform list (Fugger and Anderson), and now it looks like two more players can be added to the injury report as well.

Rookie WR Griff Whalen was in a walking boot on Sunday, with head coach Chuch Pagano saying that Whalen had aggrevated a previous injury to his foot.

“He’s basically played with it for the last two or three years. He didn’t know he had it. When we brought the rookies back for that three-day period, he went out the first day and had a better day than anybody else catching and running routes. . . He went in the locker room and cut off the tape and was hobbling around. We expect him back shortly.”

Whalen is expected to miss about a week, but needs to get on the field as soon as possible in order to have a chance at making the roster. There are only a few spots open, and it looks like free agent Jeremy Ross may have the inside track on the final spot (behind Wayne, Collie, Avery, and the two drafted rookies) after playing in the top five rotation in Sunday’s practice.

LB A.J. Edds could also miss some time after ending practice with a wrap on his left knee. The severity is unknown at this point, but Edds will undergo an MRI in the next few days to find out. Edds is one of few players that can provide some depth at inside linebacker, so hopefully he can be healthy and back on the field sooner rather than later.
