[UPDATE] Injury Update: Carter, Castonzo, Ijalana Cleared for Practice

Lost in the news of rookie tight end Dwayne Allen’s signing was the injury news that Mike Chappell sneaked into his blog post for the Indy Star

Among news such as coach Chuck Pagano being glad that his new tight end would be ready for workouts, Chappell informed us of several injury updates, most notably the clearing of several players to practice.

OT Anthony Castonzo, OL Ben Ijalana, and RB Delone Carter, all promising draft picks from the 2011 NFL Draft, all missed time during mini-camp earlier this summer with minor injuries or recoveries from surgery. After promising rookie campaigns were cut short for Castonzo and Ijalana by injuries, the fact that they are healthy and ready to go for training camp is important, as a completely new offensive line tried to form some chemistry.

As for Carter, any lingering injuries were sure to cut down on his playing time in a crowded backfield. The Colts don’t have the most talented backfield, but they do plan on running by committee, and if rookie running back Vick Ballard were to show potential in Carter’s stead, it likely would be difficult to regain his snaps.

Also, it looks like rookie defensive tackle Josh Chapman will start camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, as most expected. Chapman underwent surgery in January to repair an injured ACL, something that he played through throughout his final year at Alabama. The injury was known before the draft, one reason why Chapman fell all the way to the fifth round. However, once healed, Chapman has the potential to receive a lot of time in the defensive tackle rotation.

A few other veterans will likely also start camp on the PUP, although who those players are is currently unknown. Joe Reitz (ankle) was limited in mini-camp/OTAs, but did work his way back into the mix, and should be fine. These players all missed time in OTAs, but most were very small injuries that shouldn’t carry over: TY Hilton, Justin Snow, Drake Nevis, David Caldwell, Dwight Freeney, Buddy Jackson, Coby Fleener, and David Legree.

According to Adam Caplan, Chapman has been put on the non-football injury (NFI) list, as his injury didn’t come with the Colts. LB Tim Fugger and OT Justin Anderson have also been put on the PUP list.
