Somehow I missed this awesome quote by Dwight Freeney in a FOX Sports exclusive last month. It’s always refreshing to hear players spouting loyalty for a town, but when it entails references to LeBron James’ “Decision” two years ago, it adds a layer of humor that I personally find hilarious.
“I’m kind of old-school when it comes to that thought. I’m not LeBron trying to leave the team. I’m more like the era of Magic and Lawrence Taylor, who stayed with that same team for their entire careers win, lose or draw. They were married to the city they were drafted in. You go through the tough times and great times with them, and that’s it. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”
Freeney’s future with the Colts is still up in the air. He costs a base $14 million this year, the final year of his contract, and could still be traded. From the looks of it though, I personally believe the Colts plan to keep him this season, and then possibly sign him to a reduced contract next season, depending on his success in the new scheme.
No matter what happens, Freeney’s been a fantastic player and member of the community in Indianapolis, and deserves the love of fans that he often gets.
Thanks to Football Outsiders for bringing this to my attention.
