Draft time always makes me nostalgic. The reason is because I’d rather analyze the knowable past than spin my wheels on the unknowable future. I feel that what we can know about the future will come more from the past than from the present.
That’s a pseudo-philosophical way of introducing the internet version of the clip show.
Remember to check out some classic 18to88.com posts about the draft this week:
- I’m not sure if I’m going to do a mock this year, but you don’t want to miss last year’s. From there follow the links back to see efforts from previous years.
- Jesse Nocon predicted this year’s first round way too early.
- Jesse did some excellent profiles of how the Colts draft in the first two rounds, and then in rounds 3 and 4. These are must reads this week.
- My antipathy for the draft is legendary and stretches back to the early days of 18to88. It’s not actually the draft I hate; it’s the certainty with which the media talks and issues their judgements. That makes me sick.
I will definitely be doing “What to Expect” all next week. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite series of the year, because it helps to lower irrational expectations. Drafting a player is generally about a 3 year process of scouting, drafting, coaching, and developing a guy from a college player into an NFL starter or (with luck) a star. It’s not wise to expect much from the rookie season.
